Breakfast:
1 sunny side up egg
1 cup Vietnamese coffee
Midmorning pick-me-up:
Tall Starbucks hot mocha (nonfat milk)
Lunch:
3 pieces smoked fish wrap from Sugarleaf
1 glass "Relax" juice from Sugarleaf (pure apple, pineapple, beetroot and mint juice) - I do not recommend. Lasang lupa at lasang tangkay. Blech.
Dinner:
Remainder of smoked fish wrap from lunch (3 pcs)
Grilled fish
1 glass Carbtrim
I munch on sugarfree gum the whole day to address my oral fixation. It works, but it makes me gassy.
In fairness, since I started shunning rice and bread, I get full more easily from veggies. I am yet to quit to fully quit carbs as I eat whole wheat pita bread. Maybe this week :-)

Failure
Yeah, i failed the first time. I gained back more than I lost when I went on South Beach. This is attempt number 2: baby steps. I quit pork, beef and rice the past two weeks. I.m still trying to quit carbs and sweet drinks. I've only had Starbucks twice the last week and all drinks were either water, Carbtrim or sugarfree coffee. Well, except for the 3-4 times I can't resist coke. I wish it was real cocaine I can't resist, but no, this doggone carbonated drinks will be the death of me. And I really miss tinapay.
Wish me luck.
Wish me luck.

9:00am
Malunggay and Bacon fritata
Rosemary Lemon Chicken skewers (from yesterday's "lunch")
Tomato soup
1 cup Nescafe sugarfree coffee
2:00pm
Sizzling shrimp
Salad with creamy sesame dressing
Almond Gelato
8:00 pm
Chicken Adobo and monggo soup
Tuna salad
Highlights:
I can eat the malunggay and bacon fritata everyday. And the sizzling shrimp is again restaurant quality. I used to feel that the portions are kawawa but I'm starting to get full easily so the portions now feels just enough.
Daya moment: I still have aftershocks of yesterday's transgressions and I kept on munching on the belgian butter flavored popcorn I bought from the mall throughout the day. I don't know if it's guilt or my system rejecting the carbs, but I had gas pains the whole day :-(

8:00pm (Aye and George visited me at home and I fed them spaghetti)
Garlic Squid
Mixed Vegetables c/o George
String cheese
Mixed Veggies ala George |
The squid is really tender and tasty George ended up eating this side of veggies |
Midnight snack:
3 pieces sugarfree chocolate
Highlights:
Loved the shawarma and the squid. When George and I were still roomies, I used to scoff and gag at her veggie medleys. So when she brought this dish over, I was surprised that I liked it. Not because she's not a good cook but because I actually like eating vegetables now. Thank you SexyChef! You did what my mother and numerous roomies failed to accomplish.
Exercise:
Therapy day. We are doing a new program that targets my endurance and defensive walking skills (yes, there is a term). I had to do several obstacle courses to prepare me once I let go of my assistive devices for good. My therapist asked me to buy a home bike system so ngi for future sessions.

2:30pm
Chicken Teriyaki

Meditteranean Fish
Salad with balsamic dressing
Happy cow cream cheese
Coke Light
Love this! Best dinner combo so far |
Love the balsamic dressing on the salad. The fish is also very tender and flavorful. I gave in and went back to Coke Light, though. I figured soda can't be very good anyway so go big or go home. I think I need a little bit of sugar high because I felt lightheaded and really hungry earlier in the day. I can hear my stomach rumbling during the meeting, mitigated by the fact that everyone is eating pasta, rice and fried chicken. The humanity!
Exercise:
I did two roundtrips from my station to the pantry to the Pagudpud training room and back. I was practically sweating by the time I reach my seat. Plus I'm doing arm weights now.
And for the best part of the day:
This is love right here, folks |
My brother bought me these, probably because I complained that the chocolates I previously bought tasted like rat's ass. This is my reward for staying with the diet and because it's the 6th monthsary since my accident . I sampled the pecan caramel one and I can't taste the (lack of) sugar, so yay!

8:00 am
Mushroom and cheese omelette
Corned tuna
1 cup Nescafe sugarfree coffee
1:30 pm
Shrimp Scampi
Greek Cucumber Salad
4:00pm - 6:00pm
290g Cashew nuts
Coke Zero
8:00 pm
Chicken Fajitas
Vegetarian Chili
Chickendogs and dip
Buco Pandan
Highlights:
The shrimp scampi is pretty good as well as the vegetarian chili (the pork and beans thingy above). I hate the cucumber salad, again it tasted suspiciously like wiwi. I got some tips from a work friend who also did South Beach on where to buy good sugarfree chocolates.
Exercise:
I was able to walk around the entire third floor in one go, so there's that.

8:30am
Grilled bangus with scrambled egg
1 cup Nescafe sugarfree coffee
1:00pm
Chicken Burger
Salad with creamy sesame dressing
Vanilla Pudding
3:30pm
Tuna Salad
6:00pm
2 pcs chicken empanada
1/2 cup Coke Zero
9:00pm
Vegetable Crudite with hummus
Korean Beef Stew
Highlights:
I liked the dinner entrees, although I switched the cucumber salad with the vegetable with hummus. I liked the hummus but the celery sticks tasted (and smelled) like wiwi.
I cheated though and had my first bite of tinapay after 7 days! I can't resist the chicken empanada my brother brought home.
Exercise:
Walked around for about 30 minutes on our rooftop deck while my nephew ran around like crazy. I'm feeling a bit of strain in my balakang, though so I need to take it easy for a bit, especially given the walkathon yesterday at the mall. I hope I can do more high impact exercises so I can sweat out the pounds. Kebs na, wala naman akong deadline.

8:00am
Lunchmeat Omelette
Cauliflower and Chikpeas Curry (half a serving)
1 cup Nescafe Sugarfree Coffee
12:00pm
Chicken Satay with Peanut sauce
Tuna Salad
Coffee Custard
5:00pm
Seafood Salad @ UCC
Black Coffee with 2 Splenda
9:00pm (Bday party)
1/2 glass Iced tea
3 small sticks pork barbeque (no fat)
A bite of creamy fish somenthing :-(
Highlight:
I love chicken satay, it can do no wrong. However, I did have my first cheat food, the UCC Seafood Salad. Although it's still technically greens, the breaded scallops are sooo sinful, I can't resist. Also, I'm better off staying at home or at the office as there are very few temptations. No more eating out or parties until I end my 3 weeks.
Exercise:
Went malling using just one crutch. At the Mall of Asia. Boom!
Sixth day with no rice, no bread, no pasta, no sugar. I don't know why I'm still alive (and energetic!).

9:00 am
Hardboiled egg and Canadian Bacon
3 small pcs tuna loaf
1 cup Nescafe sugarfree coffee
1:00pm
Stirfry Chicken with Basil
Salad with Green Goddess Dressing
1 glass Coke Zero
4:00pm
Chocolate Mousse
Peanuts
8:00pm
Tausi Fish Fillet
Sauteed Kangkong
String cheese
11:00pm
2/3 pack cashew nuts
Highlights:
The salad with green goddess(!) dressing is pretty good, which is surprising because I don't like vegetables. I'm starting to enjoy lettuce and dressing and will probably continue to enjoy this food item even after the diet. When I look at the menu, it seems I'm eating A LOT but the trick is small (kawawa-sized) portions and eating more often so I don't give in to cravings. I also like the fact the main courses are not dry and are often very sauce-y so except for the lack of rice, I don't feel like I'm dieting at all
Daya moment: Although it seems like I'm enjoying desserts (mousse, custard), these are all, in fact, JELLO. Flavor-infused gelatin. Which is not bad at all, but dammit, now I'm thinking of actual chocolate mousse.
Also, beware. String cheese is vile. Pure evil. But it takes care of my oral fixation.

8:00am
Mediterranean Omelette
Corned tuna
1 cup Nescafe sugarfree coffee
11:00 am
Almond Gelato
1 cup Coke Zero
4:00pm - 5:00pm
Broccoli
Cashew nuts
8:00 pm
Green Salad with remoullade dressing
Stir fried beef (I was supposed to eat this for lunch but I was full na)
Cajun chicken ( didn't get to finish this, tomorrow na lang for brekkie)
Highlights:
I liked everything today except for the almond gelato. It felt like what joylessness must have tasted like. As I write this, I still have gelatin chilling in the fridge but I'm already drinking warm milk (1%, baby!) so tomorrow na lang.
Exercise:
I was in the office the whole day and only made one trip to the pantry during my lunch break. Well, I climbed two flights of stairs and if you were in my condition, that's equivalent to a 30min stairmaster session. Will try to lift arm weights before I sleep :-)

Yakiniku beef
1 cup Nescafe sugarfree coffee
4:00pm
Kani Salad
Choco Fudge
4:30pm
Cashew nuts
8:00 pm
Egg drop soup
Chicken with cashew nuts and sauteed greenbeans
Dessert:
Dutche sugarfree chocolates
Highlight:
The yakiniku beef is tender and tasty although it screams to be paired with rice. The choco fudge was pretty okay, I just wish I have a bigger serving. I also liked the Kani salad, which is basically fake crabmeat, because I like crabmeat in general. I bought the chocolates in the mall and they are HORRIBLE. It tastes like molten cardboard and it sticks to the roof of my mouth. I still have 3 more packs laid away so god help me.
Exercise:
PT day today so pretty intense. I used to eat right before PT so I'll have energy but surprisingly, I didn't have to today. I didn't feel weak, as a matter of fact I felt satiated throughout the day.
Starting weight:
78 kilos/171 pounds - the heaviest I've ever been :-(
I forgot to do a weigh-in before I started the diet. Oh well.

6:00pm
290g cashew nuts
1/2 cup Large Coke Zero
10:00 pm
Chicken Jambalaya

Highlight of the day:
Coke Zero and cashew nuts. I was supposed to eat just 20 pcs of cashew nuts but I was on an uncomfortable conference call with a client so I stress-ate and ended up eating the whole bag. It's hard to eat with other people because I feel tempted and cheated. Also, I don't know how much soda is allowed in one day so I drank Coke Zero like water because goddamnit I want something that tastes sinful!!!

10:30am
Mushroom and shrimp Omelette
1 cup Nestle sugarfree coffee
3:00pm
Pesto Shrimp (5 small pcs)
Cauliflower salad with ham and cheese
1 glass Coke Zero
6:00pm
3 small pcs Tuna loaf
3 small pcs Chickendogs
6:30pm
4 small pcs Ube Tikoy
10:00 pm
Lentil soup
2 sticks tandoori chicken
First day on South Beach. The food is tasty and I liked everything except for lentil soup, because, well who likes lentil? The portions are much smaller than what I was used too but I didn't feel cheated because of the variety per meal. I cheated a little with tikoy (not supposed to have any sugar or carbs) but it's Chinese New Year! I was thisclose to binging with Pancit that my whole family pigged out with the whole day. So far, I didn't feel any overwhelming cravings, probably because I ate more often than usual but with smaller portions and healthier choices. Let's see if I can keep up with it for the next 2 weeks.
Highlight of the day:
Pesto Shrimp is restaurant-quality. I am very tempted to pour the remaining sauce into spaghetti noodles, though.
Exercise:
Today is Physical Therapy day so I got my workout in. Aside from the usual stretching and core strength exercises, I walked 4 rotations with no crutches, 2 rotations with obstacles, 2 rotations of walking on my side and 2 rotations of marching. Not much for other people, but I was exhausted and sweating by the end of the session.

Me and BFF Aye in late 2008 |
What a difference 3 years (and a ton of calories) make.
Instead of gaining more pounds, I've decided to gain my old waistline instead. It's harder to walk when you are carrying 160-odd pounds. Plus I have a closetful of size 8 (I'll never be a Zero) clothes rotting since 2009. I will write down everything that I eat and do exercise-wise to monitor my progress and serve as my playbook should I succeed. I don't have a target number aside from fitting in the aforementioned clothes, but even if that doesn't happen, I just want to feel healthier, lighter and consequently, happier.
